Senate to hold confirmation hearing for acting CJN on Wednesday
Last Tuesday, Saraki read a letter from Acting President Yemi Osinbajo requesting the confirmation of Onnoghen as CJN. Onnoghen has been acting CJN since November 10, 2016 when Mahmud Mohammed, his predecessor, retired.
A controversy had brewed over President Muhammadu Buhari’s delay in sending his name to the senate for confirmation as CJN. But the tension was doused when news that the president had asked the senate to confirm him filtered in. Onnoghen’s tenure as acting CJN was due to elapse on February 10, but it was only two days before the time that the presidency communicated to the upper legislative chamber on his confirmation.
However, the senate could not consider the request because it was on a three-week recess. The National Judicial Council (NJC), which had nominated Onnoghen for the position, re-nominated him on February 9 – a day before the expiration of his three-month tenure. Onnoghen is from Cross River state. He is the only CJN from the south in 30 years.
Allegri wants more intensity from Juventus despite Coppa win
Massimiliano Allegri believes there is still more to come from Juventus, with the coach demanding greater intensity from his side despite the Serie A leaders putting one foot in the Coppa Italia final with Tuesday's 3-1 first-leg defeat of Napoli.
The holders came from behind to take control of the tie, with a pair of controversial Paulo Dybala penalties and a Gonzalo Higuain goal against his old club putting Juve in a dominant position after they recovered from Jose Callejon's superbly crafted opener.
Juve are now in a strong position to win the league and cup double for the third year in a row, but Allegri felt his side were below-par in the first half, when they fell behind to Napoli for the first time at Juventus Stadium, while using a back three.
"In the first half more than having the wrong system, we made too many mistakes in our passing, but nonetheless had plenty of chances and allowed Napoli very little," Allegri told Rai Sport.
"The first half was bad on a technical level, the second was much better. I don't think we played badly with three at the back, we must made too many mistakes in our passing, but it went very well after the break.
"I have to compliment the entire squad, as they played a fine second half and managed to come back despite going a goal down.
"Napoli are always dangerous and we finished the game on a high, so this bodes well for the future. I think we can improve a great deal in terms of intensity.
"I particularly wish to compliment Miralem Pjanic, someone who has really improved."
Napoli were left to lament arguable penalty decisions made by referee Paulo Valeri, with goalkeeper Pepe Reina particularly frustrated by the official's calls, which included a spot-kick against him for bringing down Juan Cuadrado despite getting a touch on the ball.
"We had a good first half, made Juve split apart and did our work," Reina told Rai Sport. "With the second-half incidents, everything changed. The result changed because of the referee's decisions. That is all.
"What am I supposed to do, disappear? If a player gets the ball, he gets the ball, end of story. Are players not supposed to touch the ball anymore? In my view, I moved the ball, so he either had to jump or get out of the way. In my view, people aren't talking enough about the penalty on [Raul] Albiol.
"That incident was definitely more of a penalty than the Cuadrado one. We must certainly learn and improve and play a better second half, but I am absolutely furious. It's not fair. The final result was changed by the refereeing decisions. That is all you can say.
Guti: I hope Barcelona eliminate PSG
Real Madrid great Guti revealed he wanted Barcelona to stage a remarkable comeback to beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Luis Enrique's men are on the verge of a last-16 exit, trailing 4-0 on aggregate ahead of the second leg at Camp Nou on March 8.
But Guti, a Madrid great who won five LaLiga titles and three Champions Leagues with the club, hopes to see a comeback.
And the Madrid youth coach would also like to see Barca defender Gerard Pique, outspoken in his criticism of Real, be the hero.
"I want Barcelona to come back against PSG in the Champions League that way they won't be able to focus on LaLiga as much," he told El Chiringuito.
"I want Pique to score the fifth goal because he deserves it, he is the only one facing the situation head on, despite getting criticised by all sides."
Madrid are in control of their Champions League tie after a 3-1 win over Napoli in the first leg.
They are also a point clear of Barcelona atop LaLiga, and have a game in hand.
Keown: I wish Ibrahimovic joined Arsenal
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown still laments Zlatan Ibrahimovic not joining the Premier League club in 2000.
Ibrahimovic, now starring at Manchester United, was once offered a trial by Arsene Wenger, but rejected it as insulting.
Keown, who was at Arsenal at the time and won three league titles with the club, rued the fact the Swede opted against making the move.
"I regret that Zlatan Ibrahimovic never joined Arsenal," he wrote in the Daily Mail.
"He visited the club in 2000 as a teenager and such was his physique and frame my team-mates joked that the Swede was coming to take my place at centre-back.
"Even then you could see Ibrahimovic had such a big presence. Now that he is thriving at Manchester United, the comparisons with Eric Cantona are inevitable."
Ibrahimovic has gone on to enjoy a trophy-laden career at the likes of Inter, Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and now United.
The striker led United to an EFL Cup success on Sunday, scoring a brace – including the match-winner – to take his tally to 26 goals in 38 matches in all competitions this season.
Keown said the comparisons to Cantona, a United great in the 1990s, were warranted.
"I man-marked Cantona for England against France and for Everton when he was at Leeds," he wrote.
"Although Cantona was an intelligent player, I never felt he was going to run away from me. When I could lock on to him, I knew I could deal with him.
"In a one-against-one situation Ibrahimovic has more. He is bigger, stronger and more powerful.
"Cantona unlocked the door for United’s success in his five seasons at the club. He will always be considered The King, but Ibrahimovic is helping to rescue United's reputation and make them great again."

CBN Sells $230 Million To 16 Banks, Boosts Financial Market
Sixteen banks shared in the $230 million foreign exchange (forex) mart by the Central Bank of Nigeria through the forward contract agreement.
This forms part of the fulfillment of the apex bank’s pledge to ensure liquidity in the interbank market under the latest policy announced last week.
Of the 16 financial institutions, 13 are commercial banks, one is a development financing establishment, while two are merchant banks.
An analysis of the auction’s participants showed that nine commercial banks and one merchant got $162.85 million at bid rates ranging from N325/$ to N360/$, while six others got $58.52 million at bid rates between N315/$ and N320/$.
However, the first 10 banks with a total request of $162.85 million in the forwards contract have the maturity date of March 27, 2017, while the other six have a maturity date of April 24, 2017.
Consequently, the parallel market strengthened to N460 per dollar, its highest level in more than three months, following the series of interventions by the apex bank.
Last week, the regulator offered $500 million in 60-day forward contract, but ended up selling $370 million, as some banks could not back up their bids with naira equivalent or provisions.
A sub-Saharan economist for RenCap, Yvonne Mhango, said: “There are rays of light in Nigeria’s outlook…foreign reserves have risen over 20 per cent to $29 billion and a more comfortable CBN has this week announced changes to its foreign exchange policy and injected more dollars into the local market. Since Monday (February 20), the parallel market rate has strengthened,” she said.
Research analyst at FXTM, Lukman Otunuga, said that though Monday’s new foreign exchange policy, which made more dollar available for the few at 20 per cent above the official rate is already easing some pressures, it does little to solve the major problem of multiple exchanges.
According to Otunuga, Nigeria’s five adopted exchanges continue to add to the uncertainty with both firms and investors constantly left confused. The bearish combination of depressed oil prices, foreign exchange scarcity and tepid economic fundamentals continue to expose the Nigerian economy to downside risks.
Analysts at Afrinvest said: “In our view, while the implementation of the revised foreign exchange market guideline has been greeted with much optimism, we do not believe this move can sustainably address the lingering foreign exchange liquidity challenges in the economy without relaxing forex rate peg and review of list of items ineligible for forex transactions in the parallel market.”
More Youths To Be Gainfully Employed In 2017 says FG
The Secretary to Government of the Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is laying a solid foundation for the future generation through his leadership style.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Lawal, who spoke at a roundtable with top government officials in Owerri on Saturday, said that by no fewer than one million youth will be gainfully employed by year end.
The SGF was in Owerri on Friday where he was conferred with a Fellowship at the 5th Convocation of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo.
He said Buhari’s administration was not witch-hunting anybody, but wanted to ensure that impunity and corruption were eradicated in the country.
Lawal said the Federal Government had already engaged over 30,000 youths through its numerous programmes and job creation, adding that one million youths would be gainfully employed before the end of 2017.
He said the president inherited a lot of challenges ranging from insecurity to corruption, adding that the situation needed support and patience to fix the economy.
He said that everybody must join hand to rediscover the nation and to put it back to where it rightfully belong.
He said, “We have commenced a new journey of rapid and sustainable economic growth that will usher us prosperity despite all the challenges.
“Our economy should have been among the strongest in the world if not for the high level of corruption which is more evident in key sectors like education and health care delivery.”
The SGF said the administration had recorded huge success since it started the fight against corruption and had prosecuted many public office holders.
He added that the Whistleblowing policy had helped the administration recovered millions of naira from corrupt Nigerians, adding that the huge sum would be reinvested to boost the economy.
Lawal said that government was aware of the pains Nigerians were passing through. He assured that government was doing everything possible to address it.
“This government has introduced diversification policy and very soon we will begin to witness changes as we have witnessed in rice and wheat production,” he said.
Gov. Rochas Okorocha said that this was not the time for Nigerians to weep or complain in the struggle for nationhood, but a time to comply.
According to him, Nigeria must write the history of this recession, just like other advanced nation did in their own struggle to greatness.
Okorocha further said Buhari’s main job was not to build skyscrapers but to lay a solid foundation for other successors to build.
He said Nigerians should continue to pray for the president as his emergence was divine and the purpose must be fulfilled.
Okrocha also admonished youths to de-emphasize the search for civil service jobs, but to see agriculture as the fastest means to create wealth.
Buhari’s P.A Blasts Dele Momodu For Crediting Osinbajo
Personal Assistant to President Buhari on social media, Lauretta Onochie, has lampooned Dele Momodu for crediting Acting President Yemi Osinbajo with the improvements in foreign exchange and engagement with the public.
Momodu had praised Osinbajo for charting a new path for the country in his weekly column tagged “Pendulum”.
Onochie, however, disagreed with him, saying “its sad Dele Momodu is clever by half”
On her twitter handle, Lauretta wrote “With a mindset like this, it’s not hard to work out that Dele Momodu is too clever by half. If he does not understand “Team”, how can he understand “Team Spirit”?
“The President and the Acting President have a great understanding of what it means to be a team. They respect, consult and collaborate with each other. Sync”.
Dele Momodu is used to the “Leaders behaving badly” ways of leadership where deputies do not dare breathe without the permission of the Principal.
I have no doubt that Dele Momodu runs his Corruption-friendly business empire that way. He decides alone and imposes on his staff.
The difference between Buhari/Osinbajo and Jonathan/What’s his name, administrations is not only the anti and pro-corruption. One is a team, the other wasn’t.
While Nigerians are applauding the cohesive team spirit that exits between our President and our VP, Dele Momodu is using it to earn his keep from his corrupt friends.
It’s common knowledge that under this administration, all businesses whose foundation was built on corruption, will collapse. Did I hear a loud OVATION?
As an image maker and a friend of the corrupt especially of those who raped our nation, has Dele Momodu stopped to ask where his fees are coming from? Stolen funds?
Dele Momodu must borrow some common sense from some of our youth who are educated and who know the meaning of “Team”. Here’s one from Japheth J Omojuwa.
It’s not lost on Nigerians that Dele Momodu helped to encourage corruption by providing a platform for our corrupt nouveau rich to massage their corrupt ego.
Dele Momodu has taken a stand for corruption. He must now understand that the respect that exists between our two leaders, is stronger than his love for the corrupt.
Nigerians are learning again, that a President can delegate to the Vice so the benefit will go to Nigerians, not just to them.
Dele Momodu can no longer hide his disdain for the war on corruption. But joining accidental Social Media practitioners in this way is to say the least, sickening!
One thing is certain. Nigerians are learning from a credible team that great respect, friendship, collaboration and consultations are possible between workmates”.
Say “No’ To Dele Momodu’s divisive stance. It’s selfish, self-centred and egocentric. He alone, stands to gain. END. Thanks for retweeting”

Stop Praising Osinbajo, Nothing Like ‘Osinbajo Administration’ – APC Group
The All Progressives Congress, APC, Youths Renaissance has insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari is the head of the current administration.
The group, therefore, warned those referring to the government as ‘Osinbajo administration’ to stop forthwith.
A statement by Collins Edwin, National Secretary, APC Youths Renaissance, noted with dismay the “attempts by some Nigerians and their collaborators in the media to create crisis of confidence and severe the smooth working relationships between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo through unnecessary praises and accolades”.
It said since President Buhari left Nigeria for London in January, prominent Nigerians and organisations had formed the habit of making superficial praises of the successes achieved by the APC-led Federal Government under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari, in which Professor Osinbajo is standing-in for him in Acting Capacity.
“We are using this medium to educate these professional merchants of conflicts that there is nothing like Osinbajo Administration in this regime, but the Buhari Administration.
“Hence, whatever successes achieved by anybody, whether by Professor Yemi Osinbajo or any of the Ministers serving under the four-year mandate given to our great party by Nigerians, the credit should go to the Buhari Administration.
“We will henceforth view anyone who still indulge in this balonious habbit of making sycophantic praises and ascribing credits to an individual against the administration as unveiled enemy of the Nigerian people who do not want peace in our leadership”.

The Minister of State, Power, Works and Housing, Hon. Mustapha Baba Shehuri who made the disclosure in Ilorin, Kwara state capital said the project which will be achieved under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement has reached an advanced stage in terms of implementation. Hon Sheuri said this at the official commissioning of 250 housing estate units financed by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria(FMBN) and developed by Kam- Abioye Nigeria Limited located along Bala-Eiyenkorin road, Ilorin, the state capital. He said this became necessary because, “Every government has the responsibility of addressing the welfare of its citizens in all possible ways.It is in this context that it has been a matter of priority for the President Muhamamdu Buhari led administration to provide affordable housing for the teeming Nigeria’s populace”. The Minister who said that, “National Housing models have been designed and approved for each six geo political zones of the country added that,”he design of the housing units is based on the cultural diversities and climatic conditions in the choice of the houses and in line with the present administration’s vision of standardizing building materials to boost local content by encouraging our artisans and craftsmen as well as the creation of employment”. While noting further that, “the 250 housing units being commissioned today are equipped with basic amenities required for a decent life”,the minister stressed that, ‘the developer has done a good job and it is my humble prayer that the beneficiaries will make good use of these facilities to ensure the accomplishment of the lofty objectives for which huge expenditures were incurred by the government’. Presidency: There is a cabal but I am not part of it- Nasir El-Rufai says
"It is not correct to say I am part of those that influence things in the Villa. Am I very close to Buhari? Yes. I worked very closely with him in the CPC (Congress for Progressive Change) when everyone had given up on him. I know him, I know how he thinks and he trusts me. He knows that I am driven by public interest. Do I participate in federal decision making? I don’t. I am too busy addressing Kaduna problems to be part of it. When I am called for an opinion or when I happen to be around, and I have an input or if I see something going seriously wrong; I drive and go and see Mr. President I have heard A, B, C, D. I don’t think it is not right, you should consider doing C, D, E. I do that and I drive back to Kaduna.
My primary assignment is Kaduna. I am not involved in the Federal Government. People like to say and attribute so much to me, and sometimes it is good for me, it gives me a larger than life image. Is there a cabal? There is always a cabal. Even in your own newspaper houses, there is a cabal. Nobody can run an institution without a coterie of two, three, four trusted people. There is always a cabal; the issue is whether it is a positive or a disruptive cabal. Am I a member of the cabal? No, I am governor of Kaduna state; I work for Kaduna state 24/7.

SAD NEWS For Nigerians!! Buhari Is Death: The Worst Has Happened. Aisha Buhari Weeps Bitterly – Live on CNN
His trip and absence from the country has been trailed by controversy. There has been speculation that the president is sick and some even went as far as saying he was dead but all these reports have been debunked by the presidency.
The only time we heard about her was when she travelled to see her husband in the United Kingdom and photos were released as proof. But, Nigerians are not buying it as some have claimed it is photoshopped.
Aisha has also not been active on social media. Her last post on Facebook was on February 4 about world cancer day. On Twitter, it was on January 27 when she retweeted about making the people of Kogi State beneficiaries of free screening programme.
Her silence on this matter is deafening and some Nigerians are wondering why she has chosen to stay mute
Anambra Election: We Are Not Supporting Any Candidate - IPOB
The group said they were aware of the efforts by some politicians trying to drag its name into Nigerian politics.
IPOB in a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, said they remained committed to the leadership of its founder, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whom he described as their prophet.
According to him, IPOB was not interested in any political party and would in no way support any politician in Nigeria.

The statement reads:
“IPOB and its leadership worldwide warn those involving IPOB under the command and leadership structure of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with the forthcoming electioneering politics of Anambra State under the constitution of Nigeria should desist from doing so forthwith.
We have observed with alarming dismay how some shamelessly unscrupulous individuals are trying desperately hard to tag our revered name IPOB to their nonsensical party politics in Nigeria.
The public is hereby warned to stay away from such groups and individuals because such adventure have always ended in shame. IPOB is not and can never be part of any electioneering in the Luggardian contraption we have come to know as Nigeria. Anybody telling you IPOB is supporting any political party is a deceiver and should be stone.
IPOB under the leadership of the prophet of our time Mazi Nnamdi Kanu are not part of these treacherous anti-Biafra meetings going on in the homes of some washed out politicians and can never be part of it.
We are not in the business of campaigning for the restructure of Nigeria, we are 100% focused on the puritanical pursuit of the restoration and liberation of Biafra from tyranny. We cannot be part of those who are claiming to be IPOB in whatever customary guise or assumed elders who have spent their whole lives serving Hausa Fulani interests.
They have achieved nothing in their lifetime towards the liberation of our people worth referencing. They have continued to shamelessly tag IPOB to their myriad of names in the hope of misleading our people into following them into their evil Nigerian politics.
The Elders Council established by our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been dissolved since 2014 when it was discovered these ‘elders’ were campaigning for the same Buhari and his APC to take over Biafraland.
We stopped them then and we shall stop them now no matter the party they intend to use to achieve their satanic purpose disguised as patriotism for Biafra.
These criminals dancing from one project of shame to another have been using the revered name of IPOB to dupe desperate politicians. First these criminals said Biafra will come by legal method. When that failed, they said it would come through diplomatic means.
Now that their much vaunted diplomatic approach has fallen flat, they have opted for what they call political process. This is their last ditch desperate attempt to immerse themselves in the sell-out politics of Nigeria. We IPOB say we are not part of it.
Therefore, we would like to warn again that the name IPOB is hallowed and cannot be involved with Nigeria politics.
IPOB family members worldwide are not politicians but freedom fighters diligently pursuing the restoration of ancient nation of Biafra with truth and honesty. We are not going to derail from this divine pursuit of liberating our people from the shackles of bondage and slavery from Nigeria come what may.”
Aso Rock Boils As 36 Governors Take Deadly Decision Over Buhari’s Continuous 'Hide And Seek Game' In London
An impeccable source, disclosed that the decision was taken at the last Governors’ meeting, in Abuja.
Recall, that Buhari had a few weeks ago, written to the Senate to inform the Legislators, that he would proceed on medical vacation for 10 working days, and that Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, would act on his behalf as President, during his absence.
The President however, was expected to resume work on Monday, February 6, 2017, but he again wrote a letter to the National Assembly a day before, informing the Lawmakers that he needed to extend his leave, in order to complete and get the results of some tests recommended by his Doctors.
